Fuel-Efficient Technology

How does an engine achieve impressive fuel economy and at the same time deliver excellent performance? Advanced technology is a big part of the answer – and a major reason why Ford offers on average the most fuel-efficient lineup of full-size pickups.*

  • Twin Independent Variable Cam Timing (Ti-VCT) is standard in the 3.7L V6, 5.0L V8 and EcoBoost® engines. With its precise variable, yet independent, control over intake/exhaust valve timing, TI-VCT helps make possible high fuel economy numbers as well as power ratings.
  • Innovative EcoBoost engine uses the precise fuel delivery of Direct Injection at each cylinder plus the high-performance capability of Twin Turbocharging.
  • Electronically controlled 6-speed automatic transmission, standard with all engines, has close-ratio gearing optimized for low-end performance and high-end efficiency.
  • Electric Power-Assisted Steering (EPAS) System is yet another feature that saves fuel. In place of the conventional hydraulic pump that draws power from the engine, EPAS uses a more efficient electrically actuated motor.

* Based on an average of the EPA-estimated highway fuel economy of each manufacturer's engine lineup in the Full-Size Pickups under 8,500 lbs. GVWR, non-hybrid class.

EcoBoost® Engine

Ford engineers drew from their extensive experience using direct injection technology and turbocharging in diesel engine development and created the innovative EcoBoost® engine option that’s unsurpassed in combined power, efficiency and capability. Direct injection produces a cooler, denser charge that generates more power per every drop of fuel, while the two small air-to-air intercooled turbochargers spool up much more quickly than a single large turbo. What you experience is instantaneous low-end torque responsiveness with virtually no turbo lag. EcoBoost generates 90 percent of its amazing 420 lb.-ft. of torque from 1,700 to 5,000 rpm. And can it tow? F-150 with EcoBoost has best-in-class maximum towing capability at 11,300 lbs.** Best-in-class payload, too, at 3,060 lbs.** The EcoBoost engine underwent over 1,900 hours of testing at full-boost conditions, as well as thermal testing to simulate 10 years of operation in the harshest environments. So EcoBoost is up to any task you can give it — and then some.

* 2011 EPA-estimated 16 city/ 22 highway/18 combined mpg, 4x2. **When properly equipped. Class is Full-Size Pickups under 8,500 lbs. GVWR, non-hybrid, vs. 2011/2012 competitors.

Best-in-Class Fuel Economy 3.7L V6

With today's high prices at the pump, you need the highest fuel economy you can get from your pickup — but not at the expense of power. The standard 3.7L V6 in the F-150 4x2 delivers best-in-class* fuel economy (EPA-estimated 17 city/23 hwy/19 combined mpg). It also delivers 302 horsepower and 6,100-lb. tow capability (when properly equipped). The 3.7L is E85 Flex Fuel-capable, features dual overhead cams (DOHC) and four valves per cylinder, plus Twin Independent Variable Cam Timing (Ti-VCT) technology. Ti-VCT allows for variable control of the intake and exhaust camshafts, optimizing combustion at full load to increase power and low-speed torque. It also enables variable valve overlap, which enhances fuel economy and improves cold-start operation with lower exhaust emissions.

*Class is Full-Size Pickups under 8,500 lbs. GVWR, non-hybrid, vs. 2011/2012 competitors.

5.0L V8

The available 5.0L Ti-VCT 4V V8 generates an impressive 360 horsepower and 380 lb.-ft. of torque. So not surprisingly, the 5.0L V8 has the most horsepower and torque, plus the highest towing and payload capacities, of any small-displacement V8 engine.* And it flexes all this muscle while delivering an EPA-estimated 21 highway miles per gallon. The 5.0L is engineered with Twin Independent Variable Cam Timing (Ti-VCT) technology. Ti-VCT allows for variable control of the intake and exhaust camshafts, optimizing combustion at full load to increase power and low-speed torque. It also enables variable valve overlap, which improves cold start operation with lower exhaust emissions. Other notable features: a high-strength aluminum engine block, optimized camshafts and 10.5:1 compression ratio to help maximize low-speed torque, and a cylinder head designed to increase airflow. Along with its potent V8 power and Flex Fuel capability, the 5.0L delivers proven Built Ford Tough® durability.

*When properly equipped. Class is Full-Size Pickups under 8,500 lbs. GVWR, non hybrid vs. 2011/2012 competitors.

6.2L V8 Engine

The available 6.2L V8 features a single overhead cam valvetrain with dual-equal variable cam timing. The large bore (4.02”) allows for larger intake and exhaust valves for improved engine breathing, while the short stroke (3.74”) makes higher engine speed possible for increased horsepower. The 6.2L has lightweight aluminum cylinder heads and pistons for efficiency and employs a cast iron cylinder block for durability. There are other impressive specs. But the ones you're no doubt most interested in are those you can really feel: power ratings of 411 horsepower and 434 lb.-ft. of torque that no other engine in its class can match.* And if you're into towing for business or recreation, how does a best-in-class 11,300-lb. tow rating sound?* The 6.2L V8 is optional in the F-150 Lariat SuperCrew and Platinum; standard in Harley-Davidson® and SVT Raptor.

*When properly equipped. Class is Full-Size Pickups under 8,500 lbs. GVWR, non-hybrid, vs. 2011/2012 competitors.

Electronic 6-Speed Transmission with Tow/Haul Mode

The standard electronically controlled 6-speed close-ratio transmission helps optimize power delivery for excellent fuel economy. A selectable tow/haul mode improves performance when towing or hauling heavy loads by compensating for grade and load, and reducing gear hunting, improving power delivery, and using engine braking to help slow the truck when descending hills.

SelectShift Automatic® Transmission

The 6-speed SelectShift Automatic® transmission with tow/haul mode lets you operate in one of two modes of operation. (1) Progressive Range Select lets you toggle on the shift lever to reduce the range of available gears while in Drive. Tap down into Range Select mode and the display shows the available gears and highlights the one in use. This feature allows you to limit the use of upper gears when heavily loaded or while towing on grades. (2) Full Manual function lets you pull the shift lever into “M” for manual mode and use the same toggle switch to select the gear desired. The display will show the selected gear and the control system will lock the torque converter and hold that gear for a full manual transmission feel. The SelectShift Automatic is available on XL, STX and XLT, and standard on all other models.

F-150 SVT Raptor

The awesome F-150 SVT Raptor pushes the proven Built Ford Tough® truck heritage above and beyond ordinary roads. This street-legal, factory-designed, off-road capable and Baja-tested machine delivers true off-road performance thanks to its stock, high-performance parts: • Big-bore 6.2L SOHC V8 rated at 411 horsepower and 434 lb.-ft. of torque • FOX Racing Shox™, the only internal triple-bypass shocks (providing a 7-in. wider track) available on a production truck • BFGoodrich® 35" all-terrain tires • 4.10 front axle with new Torsen® differential and 4.10 electronic-locking rear axle • 11.2 inches of front suspension travel and 12.1 inches of rear travel • Oversized heavy-duty skid plates. • Unique brick-wall front grille with marker lights says Raptor is no ordinary truck. The SVT Raptor is available in SuperCab and SuperCrew models and now offers an available new Front/Rear View Camera (with required Navigation System). The front camera, mounted in the grille, is designed for use under 15 miles per hour while negotiating off-road obstacles.
