> 2011 Ranger Features: Engineering

Best-In-Class Fuel Economy

At 22 miles per gallon in the city and 27 on the highway,* Ford Ranger delivers best-in-class fuel economy with proven Ford truck toughness.

*EPA-estimated 22 city/27 highway/24 combined mpg, 2.3L manual, 2WD

Shift-on-the-Fly 4-Wheeling

Ranger 4x4 models are powered by a standard 4.0L V6 engine and feature an electronic “shift-on-the-fly” transfer case, which lets you shift between 2WD and 4WD High or Low.

4x2 and 4x4 Suspensions

The Ranger coil spring front suspension with stabilizer bar keeps the ride smooth under normal driving conditions for XL and XLT 4x2. But for rougher going, a front torsion bar is substituted on XLT 4x4 and SPORT vehicles, which are more likely to “off-road” it. The 4x4s also get jolt-absorbing heavy-duty gas shocks. The Rancho® heavy-duty gas-charged shocks for 4x4s are included in the available Payload Package.

Efficient Transmissions

Both transmission choices, standard manual and optional automatic, have an overdrive 5th gear that helps conserve fuel while cruising at highway speeds. Teamed with the standard 2.3L I-4 engine, the 5-speed plays a big part in achieving Ranger's best-in-class fuel economy.*

*EPA-projected 22 city/27 highway/24 combined mpg, 2.3L manual, 2WD.
